Urban Forest Map launches April 21

Demonstration 10am at Redwood Park, downtown San Francisco

WHO: The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, in cooperation with Friends of the Urban Forest and the City and County of San Francisco.

WHAT: The debut of the Urban Forest Map (www.urbanforestmap.org), a new online open-source software tool that anyone can use to add, update, and browse information about trees in San Francisco, such as their location, species, size, and health. The event will be hosted by Urban Forest Map founder and project manager Amber Bieg, with participation by San Francisco officials and a demonstration of the software by a fifth-grader. The media and the public are invited to attend.

WHEN: Wednesday, April 21, 10:00 a.m. Pacific Daylight Time, rain or shine.

WHERE: Redwood Park, at the base of the Transamerica Building, Washington Street between Montgomery and Sansome streets, San Francisco.

WHY: That Urban Forest Map can be used by urban foresters and city planners to better manage trees in specific areas, track and combat tree pests and diseases, and plan future tree plantings. Climatologists can use it to better understand the effects of urban forests on climates, and students can use it to learn about the role trees play in the urban ecosystem. San Francisco is the first city to use the Urban Forest Map; others are expected to follow.

ALSO: Urban Forest Map launch celebration, Thursday April 22 from 6-9 pm at 111 Minna Gallery, 111 Minna Street in San Francisco.
